Over the past century, a few different methods for writing Badaga were created, using a mix of the Latin and Kannada alphabets, with the earliest of these dates back to 1890. They are split into almost 440 separate villages, called hattis, and they have inhabited the land for thousands of years, going back at least as far as 8000 BC.Īs far as it is known, Badaga has not had a writing system for most of its existence. The word Badaga itself refers to both the language and the people that speak it. It was once considered a dialect of Kannada, and while it has many similarities with its Kannada language neighbours, it is now recognized as an independent language. They arranged separate code for vowels (a,e,i,o,u) and consonants which are the base for all Indian languages.Map of Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu, Indiaīadaga is one of the southern Dravidian languages and is spoken by around 400,000 people in the Nilgiri Hills. Machine manufacturers took the initiative and came out with a Unicode. However, the Centre and department of education did not contribute much. However, this was making data sharing difficult and they thought of the need of a standardized uniform code to exchange data. People in the printing industry were concerned about machines having a separate code of their own, given by the companies. What is unicode? Earlier, in Indian languages or non-European languages, there were no proper characters, inputs and standards hence, using Indian languages in computers was a challenge. The problem becomes huge when Indian languages, particularly the lesser known ones, have to be written in the English (Roman) script, so he invented the 'Apara' script to eliminate this drawback. This problem exists in transcribing all languages. Rao had invented the 'Apara' script in 2014 to overcome shortcomings in the Roman script, which does not always succeed in representing all the sounds of speech in script. The word Badaga refers to the Badaga language as well as the Badaga indigenous people who speak it. It has similarities with neighbouring Kannada and has now been identified as an independent language by French linguistic scholar Christiane Pilot-Raichoor. Badaga is a southern Dravidian language spoken by approximately 4 lakh people in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu. Though the language is similar to Kannada in pronunciation, it has nothing to do with fonts. Now, as the font has been developed, it will be given to them. They also have calendars and small books on their tradition and culture. "I have been working on the Badaga fonts for years. The community has more than 3 lakh people. Udupi: Baduga Mahajana Sangha, a tribal team from Nilgiri region of Tamil Nadu, felicitated scholar and software expert KP Rao for his contribution in developing the unique Unicode font.
